Stupid Bible Quotes and Ideas
March 11, 2010
Many pages could be filled with stupid bible quotes. In Leviticus,
chapter 20, God calls for killing anyone involved in bestiality,
for example. Now, without being in favor of abusing animals in
this way, we can still feel that putting the abuser to death
is a bit extreme. But where it really gets stupid is that God
also calls for the death of the poor animal, as though those
poor sheep and camels are somehow seducing their attackers.
Here are some more examples of stupid bible quotes, along
with my thoughts.
Numbers 31: 1 - 3
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward
shalt thou be gathered unto thy people.
And Moses spake unto the people, saying, Arm some of yourselves
unto the war, and let them go against the Midianites, and avenge
the LORD of Midian.
This "Lord" is all about vengeance, as we see repeatedly
in the Bible. But more than that, he is just plain hateful and
indiscriminate in his call to violence, as we see in this passage:
Numbers 31: 9 - 10
And the children of Israel took all the women of Midian captives,
and their little ones, and took the spoil of all their cattle,
and all their flocks, and all their goods.
And they burnt all their cities wherein they dwelt, and all
their goodly castles, with fire.
It doesn't seem to matter in the least that not all the people
- children included - could be guilty of whatever real or imagined
infraction that led to this battle. Nonetheless, God follows
that with this:
Numbers 31: 9 - 10
Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill
every woman that hath known man by lying with him.
But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying
with him, keep alive for yourselves.
Yes, you read that right, and it is a common theme in the
various wars God pushes his people to fight in. Kill the little
children and keep the virgins for your pleasure. Of course, the
remaining destruction is limited to all the necessities of life
and life itself. Chapter 22 instructs the Israelites to keep
all the gold, silver, brass, iron, tin, and lead, and of course
give part of it to the church leaders.
Then there are the stupid bible quotes that perhaps were not
so stupid at the time. There may have been a reason not to eat
shellfish, for example, as God instructs in Leviticus 11. Maybe
there was even a good reason why linen and woolen cloth should
not have been used together, as is laid out in Leviticus 19 -
r maybe that was just God's fashion sense being imposed on the
people.
Leviticus 25: 44 - 45
Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have,
shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall
ye buy bondmen and bondmaids.
Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn
among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are
with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your
possession.
Yes, this god advocates slavery - as long as the slaves are
those who do not share your religion. It is not so much that
these are stupid bible quotes, since they are simple quotes.
It is that the ideas they promote are stupid and worse.
